Grand Rising: On Feeling and Interbeing (2022)

About the Exhibition
Often used in place of the common salutation “good morning” by Black Southern folks, “grand rising” celebrates the act of the body, mind and spirit holistically rising after rest. Many cultures share a salutation with one another to commemorate surviving the night and embarking on the new day ahead, symbolizing a flow between stillness and triumph. With this exhibition, we declare “grand rising” to those that exist and evolve with their trauma through daily gestures, no matter how big or small. Grand Rising: On Feeling and Interbeing addresses the impacts of trauma and honors the processes of co-existence and healing. People that have experienced trauma create ways to navigate and mend wounds everyday. This exhibition holds space for empathy, care and love as we discuss how we continue to show up for ourselves and each other.
Grand Rising: On Feeling and Interbeing invited School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) student artists of visual, audio, and performance mediums to activate the SAIC Wellness Center gallery and contribute to a dialogue that explores the emotions and realities of trauma. While we collectively sit at the intersection of artful protest and harmful traditions, we believe that art holds the key to understanding our humanity. This exhibition aims to address issues of wellness, trauma, and care within the SAIC community and beyond.
